FAQ

Leg Day Routine

In our household we try extremely hard to stick to a leg washing routine for our show sheep. For our leg day routine we typically have the following items:

-Full Dimension Soap

-Green Stuff’s Leg Shag in a spray bottle

-Leg Combs

-Water Hose

-Blower

-Farm Fierce Leg Wraps

-Electrical Tape

While there are various soaps and products you can use we’ve found the Green Stuff products work really well for our show lambs, but it can vary per person!! I highly suggest finding what works for your family and show lambs!

We start our leg routine by gathering our supplies and setting up our headstand for the lambs. When the lambs are out and in the headstand we remove any halters that are still on (to prevent any injuries) and then remove the leg wraps. Next, we blow out the leg shag to remove any extra dirt and to get the shag less bunched up! Then, we rinse the leg shag of our lambs and wash them with Full Dimension Soap. Once, the leg shag of our lambs is washed and blown dry, we spray in Green Stuff’s Leg Shag. Spray in enough to where the leg shag of the lamb is damp, but not soaking wet. The Leg Shag sits in the leg hair of the lamb for 5 minutes…..my sister and I find this to be a great time to jam out to some of our favorite music! After, the 5 minutes is up we gently comb through the leg shag of the lamb to get out any tangles, then we dry the leg shag completely, before wrapping the legs! Our last step is wrapping the legs with our Farm Fierce Leg Wraps and wrapping the velcro with electrical tape!

How often should I wash my lambs legs?

This is a question I get asked most often! The majority of people suggest an every other day to every two day conditioning cycle. This means you only truly wash with soap ONCE a week!

What products should I use to wash my lambs legs?

I personally use Full Dimension Soap to wash legs, however on white faced sheep such as South Downs and Dorsets I will also use a Brightening Shampoo. After washing or rinsing legs I will spray in Leg Shag. The Leg Shag soaks in for 5 mins, then comb, blow, and wrap. :)

When do I know it’s time to start wrapping?

It’s recommended to start wrapping legs when you notice that the lambs are beginning to chew their leg hair. However, I think the quicker you get into a routine the easier it becomes! I highly recommend to start wrapping show projects once you get them!
